I know, there’s lots of them. This week – faith schools.
Actually, I don’t have a huge problem with the schools per se, but in the fact that transport to them is subsidised by local government. In our city, it used to be free but that stopped.
In another county in England, the council is talking about dropping the subsidised bus fare for kids who go to a faith school. A parent from a particular Roman Catholic school was on radio 5 complaining that this would cost her a lot of money because they live a long way out of the school’s catchment area. She argued that she wants her children to be brought up in her faith and therefore they *must* go to that school.
Here’s my answer:
- If you are so desperate for your kids to go to that school, move closer to it OR
- You chose for your kids to go there, you pay what it costs to get them there – why should the local taxpayers pick up the tab?
I would also argue that if you need to put your kids in a faith school to make sure they are brought up in that faith, then you are neglecting your duties as a parent. If you want you child brought up with a certain religion, it’s your job not a school’s.
